How to Prepare for a Dyno Session: A Guide from Paddock Performance
How to Prepare for a Dyno Session: A Guide from Paddock Performance
A dyno session is one of the most effective ways to know exactly how your engine is performing, and more importantly, how to make it better. Whether you're chasing power numbers, better driveability, or just want peace of mind, coming prepared sets you up for success. Here’s how to make the most of your appointment at Paddock Performance.
What to Do Before You Arrive
-
Fluid Check
Make sure oil, coolant, and other essential fluids are topped off. Old or low fluids can introduce variables like heat soak or inconsistent performance. -
Tires, Drivetrain & Safety
Your tires should have proper pressure and good tread. Inspect the drivetrain (driveshaft, axles, u-joints) and ensure there are no loose bolts or leaks. -
Fuel Choice
Use the same fuel you intend for tuning. If you're planning to use pump gas, E85, or any special blend, fill up beforehand so the data reflects real conditions. -
Sensors & Electrical
Check wideband O2 sensors, MAP sensors, ignition components, and ensure your battery is healthy. Weak voltage or bad sensors can cause incorrect readings and unsafe tuning. -
Be Clear About Your Goals
Let the tuner know exactly what you want, whether that means maximum horsepower, better throttle response, or reliability for track/autocross. Clear goals help tailor the dyno session to your needs.
What to Expect During the Session
-
Multiple dyno pulls with small adjustments in between.
-
Data logging of boost, timing, air-fuel ratios, and other critical parameters.
-
Communication between you and the tuner, feedback, potentially changing goals, or fine-tuning certain behaviors (e.g. how the throttle feels).
After Your Session
-
Take notes: how did the car feel on street vs. full load?
-
If provided, follow any break-in or cooldown instructions (depending on the work done).
-
Save your logs: good for future tuning, tracking gains, and baseline comparison.
Remote Tuning Option: A Smart Alternative
If you’re not local or prefer not to travel, Paddock Performance offers Remote Tuning Sessions through Track Days Tuning. You send us log files, we send back calibrated tune files. It’s the same precise technique you’d get in person, done work-week remote.
